I have just been working with getting an ad together for Medical Design Briefs. I wanted to show the readers of this magazine how a new feature in V. 4.2a works. It’s called “Image to Material”, and I wanted to also share it here. It’s common to bring in 2D image data (SEM, CT, MRI, etc.) as geometries into COMSOL Multiphysics, mesh them and then solve them. COMSOL distinguished between different image data, sort of step-wise, assigning such data as being a part of, or outside of, the model domain. While straightforward to use, this often lead to intricate meshing in areas where not a lot is happening (the lower path of the two paths in the image below). Here’s what’s new. Now you can use image data to represent 2D material distributions or identify regions with different materials by their color or gray scale. Material properties such as porosity, conductivity, or elasticity can be used for simulations of larger structures, avoiding detailed meshing of the representative geometry (the lower path in the image below). In this example, adaptive meshing was also used, in order to provide greater resolution in areas where the greatest change in the solution is occurring. Read more about this model here |
