Video Tutorial on Simulating a Gate Valve in Pipe Branch News | Posted on July 2nd, 2012 by Fanny Littmarck We’ve been running these “Lunch Time Web Tutorials” over the past couple of months, featuring 45 minutes of solving a particular problem following a comprehensive step-by-step format. Each webisode involves a different type of engineering problem, one of which focused on the modeling of a gate valve in a pipe branch. We are now mak ing this available as a set of two videos for those who missed the live tutorial. About the Gate Valve Tutorial In this tutorial John Dunec walks you through how to model a closing gate valve downstream of a wide joint in a standard steel pipe. This is a 3D fluid flow problem, as John is looking to solve for the water flow rate as the gate valve closes and where the feeder stream goes during that event. There are two main steps involved in this type of simulation. First, you need to set up and solve for the flow pattern without the gate valve, then you simulate the actual valve plate itself. Both steps of the problem capitalize on one of COMSOL Multiphysics’ strengths, namely the notion that “wherever you can type a number you can type an equation”. For instance, rather than simply entering a number in the dynamic viscosity field John enters an equation. The demonstration is sprinkled with little tips on how to solve such a problem quickly and accurately.
